The antidote to Oscar season, #2: Zach Galifianakis’ ‘Oscar Buzz’ interviews

In my previous post, I recommended the new Abbas Kiarostami movie Like Someone in Love to cinephiles who are ready for movie–awards season to be over. Moving from the sublime to the sublimely ridiculous, here’s another, more pointed antidote to the Academy Awards: To judge by the page views, many people have already discovered Zach Galifianakis’ interviews with the Best Actor and Actress nominees on the Funny or Die website.

These brief interviews are an inspired sendup of Oscar campaigning — Galifianakis lobs deadpan non sequiturs at each guest, and the question is how these movie-biz eminences will respond to his barbed hostility. Galifianakis’ guests reportedly aren’t told in advance what he’ll be asking them, so the skits are a good test of everyone’s improv skills. They’re also very funny.

Galifianakis’ boredom and contempt certainly come across as unfeigned, and it’s amusing to see Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz (a.k.a. “Christoph Breakdance”), Jessica Chastain, et al., struggle to hide their seeming bewilderment, in some cases, and remain civil. Of all the guests, Anne Hathaway may have outwitted the host by pretending to be falling-down drunk during the interview. Be sure to note how mischievous the on-screen titles become as they announce each new guest, too.

More fun than the Oscars! Watch Part 1 of Zach Galifianakis’ interviews (Jennifer Lawrence, Christoph Waltz, Naomi Watts, Anne Hathaway, Amy Adams) here:
